More Afghan Squares

Have been crocheting and knitting more, and more, afghan squares.  I am using these squares to learn and practice new techniques.  They are new to me any way.  Crochet stitch tried is the popcorn stitch.  Knitting is the basketweave, a diamond stitch, and a diamond weave which is sort of a lace like pattern.  The squares are either 8" or 10" and will put together with either 18 or 28 squares to an afghan.  I am also teaching the stitches I learn to my students.  Still have not worked up the courage to try a cable or socks.

Roman Road Scarf

Finished my first ever Roman Road scarf and have starte another with the same concept but simplier pattern.  The Knitting/Crocheting ministery at church is going well and hve about 4 members weekly who come to class.  Still have not heard more about having the women from the Downtown Rescue Mission joining us.  I have a scarf there that I am knitting on.  It is a simple garter stitch scarf made with a varigated yarn in pretty pastel blue, pink, lavender, and pale yellow.  For the crocheting class I am doing squares that will be part of the twin-sized afghans that we will make up for the Southeast Asian orphanage.  Another new mission partner.  I also have that baby blanket at home that I have mid-way finished, the cardigan I am working on plus many more projects to consider.

Purple sweater with unusual yoke, several scarves, and an afghan

Well I finally finished that purple sweater.  Don't like the neck line but was finally able to get the pattern right.  It did look a little better after I blocked it but still not happy with it.  I have started on a bright kelly green one that is crocheted.  I am also working on a knitted scarf at church on knitting day and crocheting afghan squares for crocheting day.  Will do 8" squares using different crochet patterns, i.e., shells, v-stitch, rabbits ears, etc.  At work I am working on my invention called a Roman Road Scarf for a fund raising project for the knitting/crocheting ministry.   I found a pattern similar to the one an acquaitance was wearing recently that I liked.  The base is crocheted using size "Q" hook and then additional unusual yarns are woven through the mesh the base creates.  I also found a place that carries purse handles if I want to work on some of those.  May do some felted ones over the summer to sell next Fall for fund raiser.  Also need to get some letters written for possible charitabile donations.

WIP, a number of them

I am nearing the end of the purple cardi with the unusual yoke. Has been something of a challenge. Have come up with an original idea for charity/mission project. Both the knitting and crocheting classes are going well. Though the Missions department has extended an invitation to the women currently living at the downtown rescue mission to come for lessons. I certainly hope that some of them are able to come. We have two different projects going. One is knitted scarves and hats for the mission and the other is twin-size afghans for the orphanage in SE Asia. We are also thinking about having a table at a local street fair in the Fall to help generate money for the orphanage or some othr project. Also doing baby layettes for Chose Life of North Alabama. We need to gather more knitters and crocheters to get so many projects going. The crosses I did for the Costa Rican Kairos trip went over well again this year.

Current projects.

Have started a new purple cardi that has a yoke at the top and from the point of the yoke is worked as one piece. First time on the yoke messed it up and had to start over but now moving along. I am also still working on scarves for the homeless. Instead of taking them to The Storehouse though we will be taking them to the DownTown Rescue mission. The knitting and crocheting classes are coming along nicely. A couple of women have dropped out but a couple of new ones have joined. Think the ladies are happier working on the projects for the rescue mission. I think the idea of making a full twin-sized afghan was somewhat daunting to them. I have also come up with an idea of making a Roman Road Scarf. It is modeled after the Salvation Bracelets that the Missions' Department make to take on the mission trips. Need to wash up the stuff I have here a home that is completed and take with me on Wednesday to give to the Missions' department or Rhonda which ever I am suppose to do.
I think I am going to keep the scarf that I am working on at work and give the one I have been wearing to the Rescue Mission. It is simply the nicest feeling one that I have done. The yarn is one of the chunkier (5) yarns and it feels like it was made out of fine strips of fleece.
